Helpers--Pipelayers, Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Steamfitters

These workers help licensed plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters get pipes, fixtures, and support hardware into place. A lot of the job is prep and heavy lifting rather than finished installation, so it is a practical way to learn the trade while doing physically demanding, often dirty work on active job sites.

Pros and Cons

Advantages
+ You can get started with a high school diploma and short-term training, so the entry barrier is much lower than in licensed trades.
+ The work teaches real plumbing and pipefitting skills on the job, including rough-ins, leak repairs, and system assembly.
+ Demand is steady enough to support about 4.9 thousand annual openings, even though long-term growth is only 4.9%.
+ It is hands-on work with visible results, which many people prefer over desk jobs.
+ It can be a stepping stone to a better-paid apprenticeship and eventually a licensed trade with much higher earnings.
Challenges
- The pay is modest for the effort: median annual pay is $39,270 and mean pay is $41,720.
- The work is physically demanding and often means lifting materials, working in tight spaces, and getting dirty on active job sites.
- This is a support role, so the long-term pay ceiling is limited unless you move into an apprenticeship or earn a license.
- Hiring and hours can rise and fall with local construction activity, so the job can be uneven when projects slow down.
- Much of the work is still manual labor, which leaves little room for remote work and makes the role vulnerable if crews shift more work to prefabrication or mechanized methods.
